A mile or so south of King George, Virginia , on Millbank Rd. , we found the Montague Baptist Church with a small cemetery behind it. There were no Montague plots to be found. The church is still active with a Pastor Brooks in charge. The country is hilly and wooded with some residences and small farms in the valleys. About fifteen miles east of here is the birthplace of George Washington. His family had large land holdings on this peninsula between The Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers . They would travel through the area while in route between their home in Fredericksburg and their farms near Fairview and Oak Grove. George Washington is believed to be of Montague blood through his mother, Mary Ball, who goes back to Peter Montague. There must have been a village of Montague here at one time, but I am only guessing as I have no such information. This whole area runs deep with American history, a place where our forefathers established this country of ours. Many historical sites are found in this part of the country. |
