Montague in South Carolina is now an area with several streets, roads, drives, etc. having the Montague name.  There are also the Montague Apartments.  The Village is located in the northern part of the state, about seven miles north of Greenville , on Duncan Chapel Rd. , between Hwy’s 25 and 276.

The old Montague Village included a store, a warehouse for the railroad, a cotton gin, and a few other buildings.  Today there are no buildings left; some railroad tracks are still in place but they lead nowhere.  A sign reads “ Furman University , Montague Village ”. The site is now one of the entrances to the Furman University .  The country has rolling hills that were once mostly agriculture, but today, there are rural residences, the university, and a few businesses close-by.

Doris and I talked to a Furman Watkins who is retired from the military and truck driving.  His grandfather owned the store, gin, and warehouse, etc. at Montague Village and Furman remembers going to the store, daily, as a child.  The family owned most of the land where the university is today.  Furman’s yard had large oak trees and gorgeous azaleas growing around the old brick house.
