About ten miles south of Springfield, MO, on Hwy 160, and about three miles west on SR 0 there was a Montague with a store, church, school, etc. The location today is called Tory, for the creek that bisects the road here. The Pleasant Grove Baptist Church is still located here along with a fish hatchery. We talked to Jim and Melissa Harp and her parents who live on Montague Rd. They indicated the County could not get the spelling of Montague correct, so one road sign reads Montaque and another reads Montague. Some residents pronounce the town Mon-teg. This part of the Ozarks is quite hilly and dense with trees. Small farms run mostly cattle with some farming of mainly corn in the valleys. |
