The World Drogo de Monte-acuto's Coat of Arms
Soldiers of the American Revolution

A number of Montagues appear in military records from the American Revolution. I'm going to try to summarize here. If you have additional information, please bring it to my attention!

The Historical Register of Officers of the Continental Army lists:

James Montague, Virginia, Colonel, Virginia Militia, 1779-1781.

Moses Montague, Massachusetts, Captain, Massachusetts Militia, 1779-1780. (died 1792).

The Records of the Revolutionary War, contains a copy of A List of Officers for Whose Revolutionary Services Virginia Military Land Warants were Issued Prior to December 31, 1784. Officers are listed as Generals, Colonels, Lieutenant Colonels, and "Other Officers". One Richard Montague is included under "Other Officers".

The Register of the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution notes the following (these somewhat break my stricture on relying primarily on non-Montague sources as they are apparently based entirely on Montague Genealogy information):

Daniel Montague was a soldier in the Revolution and a member of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress.

William Montague was born in Sunderland, Mass., January 11, 1760, and died in Hadley, Mass., August 4, 1839. He served in the War of the Revolution, was doing service at West Point at the time of Arnold's treachery, and was on guard duty at the time Arnold made his escape (through the soldiers knew nothing of it).

American Prisoners of the Revolution contains a copy of a List of 800 Men Who Were Prisoners on Board the Old Jersey. Dandridge notes:

"This list of names was copied from the papers of the British War Department. There is nothing to indicate what became of these prisoners, whether they died, escaped, or were exchanged. The list seems to have been carelessly kept... This list of prisoners is the only one that could be found in the British War Department. ..." (Dandridge)

The list of prisoners aboard the Old Jersey includes:

David Montague
Norman Montague
William Montague

Dandridge includes a picture of the Old Jersey prison-ship.
