The Change Log

I'm logging new material and changes here, both so I can keep track of things and so that others can see if there's anything new. I'm putting the newest items on top...

3-July-1999. Added:
Irish Montague name derivation page.
Non-biography pages available directly on the links page.
I've finally put navigational links on all pages... Maybe next I'll get around to Meta tags! I've updated some of the more popular pages with additional links to other pages and continue to work on the history page and quotes. I think I've eliminated all use of frames...

29-May-1999. Finally did a spell-check and some cleanup and added a page on major family groups. Added pages for international financier and Jewish activist Samuel Montagu (Montagu Samuel), 1832-1911, and his son Edwin Montagu, 1879-1924, who served as 1916 British Minister for Munitions and as Secretary of State for India, 1917-1922.

15-February-1999. A place search had new hits; added more info on Montague Harbour; Montague Island lighthouse; Montague, MA; and Montague, PEI (CA). Also added a link to the collected papers of Charles Montague, 1867-1928 .

7-February-1999.

Added a page for George Montagu, 1713-1789, a long-time correspondent with writer Horace Walpole. An immense amount of this information is widely available (yards of it are in the UCSC library). Walpole occasionaly did genealogy research for the Montagu's, so there is much material of interest to this site.

Added a description of the famous death of Thomas Montacute, 1388-1428, at the seige of Orleans, 1428. This was considered, along with the appearance of Joan of Arc, an act of God. Also added some material concerning this campaign and the appearance of Joan of Arc, and some dissucssion and comparison of the relation of the two.

Added a note about George Montagu Dunk, 1716-1771, being known as Father of the Colonies. Also added the Dunk Warrant page directly to this page.

Added a paragraph about the bizarre effort of Edward Montagu, 1713-1776 to advertise for a pregnant bride in Italy. Also added a paragraph about the authorship of Reflections on the Rise and Fall of the Ancient Republics.

Added a direct link to Skiles and Janet Montague's Genealogy page on the Related Sites page.

Added a placeholder to the Places page for Castle images that have been forwarded to this site. Thanks folks! I know nothing of the details...

28-December-1998. Added a Civil War page and a Revolutionary War page. Added (finally!) an alphabetical listing of individuals, so you can look someone up without having to know approximate dates. The listing is under the links page. Added a page containing published genealogies. Added some history links to the James Montagu, 1752-1794 page (at one time he commanded the ship-of-the-line Montagu). Needs more work. Added a page for the early Dutch New York settler (and Vice Director-General) Johannes Montague aka Jean de la Montague. Added pages for the early American settlers, Peter Montague and Richard Montague.

20-December-1998. Eliminated use of HTML frames. Updated and reformated main timeline. Added short page describing Spanish-American war Congressional Medal-of-Honor recient Daniel Montague (1867-1912). Added information to Basil Montagu (1770-1851) page. Much information about Basil and his son exists in the studies of the poets Coleridge and Wordsworth. Added information regarding the hermaphrodite hypothesis to page on Alice Montague (1869-1929). Added information about Captain Charles Montague's (~1592) role in Irish battle of Yellow Ford. Added a page on ships with Montagu/e name. More in Lady Mary (1689-1762).

12-December-1998. Finally had a chance to do an update pass. A fair amount of minor additions... Well, it's only taken about 6 months since completing my PhD to get back to doing something with this! This was a good "dissertation year" reset project; I hope I can continue to slowly keep adding things in a way that people will find of interest. I want to thank eveyone who has sent me useful information.

12-August-1998. Started a clean-up pass, minor additions to Vignettes... Added a description of the brothers Drogo and Ansger from a study of the Falaise Roll. I think Ansger is the oldest Montague in the timeline...
