William Lewis Montague, 1831-1908

 

Professor of languages and Montague family historian.

Entered Amherst College in 1851, graduated in 1855, became associate professor of Latin at Amherst (he taught Latin, French, and Greek), licensed to preach in 1860, in 1864 Professor of French, later also of Italian and Spanish. Served as registrar of Amherst from 1860-1880 and for 12 years ran a summer language program. Traveled in Europe and wrote numerous articles and textbooks, a member of the Societe de Linguistique... One of his books was the `Catalogue of Amherst College Library, 1855-71'...

The Ph.D. arrived late on the shores of the United States. He received a Ph.D. from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1898.

He is of special interest to this time-line, as one of his books is the `History and Genealogy of the Montague Family in America (1885)' (with George W. Montague).
