Second Duke of Montagu. Courtier. [image]

High constable at the coronation of George I; fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, 1717; knighted, 1719; George I granted him the islands of St. Lucia and St. Vincent's in the West Indies, 1722; sent 7 ships and settlers to establish a colony, the French landed a military force on St. Lucia and his deputy-governor, Captain Uring, was forced to withdraw, the inhabitants of St. Vincents repelled the landing; lost a very large amount of money in this effort; Grand Master of the Order of the Bath, 1725; carried sceptre and cross at George II's coronation; master-general of the ordnance, 1740; raised a regiment of calvary ( Montagu's Carabineers) and a regiment of infantry (both served in southern England and were disbanded after Culloden), 1745;

Died without surviving children, and the dukedom of Montagu became extinct.

It appears his personality was uneven. The duchess of Marlborough wrote: `All my son-in-law's talents lie in things natural to boys of fifteen, and he is about two and fifty.'

Lived in the miniature Versailles his father had built in Boughton.

After his death, the British national collections were kept in the family's house ( `Montagu House') in Bloomsbury. This house and the collections became the British Museum in 1759.
