Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge; Earl and Viscount, 1682; Lord Carver to the queen at coronation of James II, 1685; House of Lords, left England due to arbitrary exercise of power, joined Prince of Orange (in Holland?); raised a calvary troop and joined the prince upon his landing in England; well-rewarded; at the Prince's coronation carried the St. Edwards Staff, 1689; with the king in Ireland, 1690; fought at the Boyne and at Limerick; in Venice to obtain release of seamen (unsuccessful), 1697; privy council, 1698; ambassador extraordinary to Louis XIV of France, 1699; various diplomatic missions, 1699-1708;
