Entered Cambridge, 1632; left without a degree; called to the bar at the Middle Temple, 1641; represented Huntingdon in parliament of 1640; returned to Cambridge, 1660; attorney-general to the Queen, 1662; serjeant-at-law, lord chief baron of the exchequer, 1676.
Sentenced to death Alicia Welland, almost the last person executed for witchcraft in England.
His 2nd wife was much admired by Pepys.
