Early settler in Dutch New York [1] , physician, politician, and Vice-Director General; school master of first New York public school.
Apparently received medical doctrate from University of Leyden in 1616 and emmigrated from Holland to Harlem, New York, in 1624, where he practiced medicine. He returned to Leyden, but then came back to New York in 1647. He was school master of the first public school in New York in 1652, a member of the Governor's Council, and Vice-Director General of Fort Orange from 1656-1664. He married Rachel de Forest in 1626.
