| Peter Montague/Mountague, 1603-1659 |
Jamestown, Virginia, settler in 1621. A typical political career in early Colonial Virginia.
Second son of Peter Montague of Boveny, parish of Burnham, Buckinghamshire, England, and wife Ellenor Allen.
Arrived in Jamestown in 1621 aboard the Charles. In 1624-1625, at age 21, was listed with Captain Samuel Mathews men. He had three wives, the last of which was Cicely, daughter of Governor Mathews. He had many descendents (all apparently from his second marriage) who were active in colonial Virginia, many named Peter and William. A number appear in this timeline.
Patented 150 acres in New Norfolk in 1637; obtained a land grant in Nansemond County in 1642; in 1645 patented another 150 acres in New Norfolk; and in 1647 was granted 100 acres in "Nansimum" county. In 1658/9 patented 400 acres in Lancaster county.
Represented Nansemond in House of Burgesses, 1652-1653, Commissioner of Lancaster County, 1656-1657. Burgess for Lancaster, 1658; appointed sheriff of Lancaster in 1658.
Peter, and many of the other early Montagues of Virginia, lived on Montague's Island in Middlesex County, Virginia. A number were buried there.
Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5 is unusually detailed and has considerable information on Peter and his immediate descendents. A footnote notes that until around 1700 in Virginia the name was usually spelled Mountague, but also notes at least one legal document from Virginia at this time using the spelling Mountecough. Does anyone know if this spelling has been common elsewhere?
(I'm violating my stricture a bit here about deriving these pages only from non-Montague sources, because the sources noted below cite Genealogy of the Montague Family of America... and History and Genealogy of Peter Montague... as their primary sources. It appears, however, that there are numerous legal records collaborating the details.)
