The World Drogo de Monte-acuto's Coat of Arms
Pedro Guerin de Montagu, 1168-1230

Crusader. 14th Grand Master of the Hospitalers (Knights of Malta), 1207-1227/8.

I believe Pedro Guerin was often called Brother Guerin Montaigu, or Garin de Montaigu, sometimes with the title Master of the Hospital or Grand Master of the Order of St John, and with Montague spelled all over the map. I think the formal title was Master of the Hospital in Jerusalem, Acre, and Cyprus. Although I have encountered references to him 2-3 times, I have not found much about him in person. Since organizations descended from the Knights of Malta still exist, there must be more information - If anyone knows anything, please be so kind as to e-mail me...

Elected Grand Master in 1208, helped the Christians in Little Armenia repel the attacks of the Sultan of Iconium (I believe Little Armenia was actually on the southwest coast of Turkey). In 1218, played a distinguished role in the defense of Damieta. When Frederic II was excommunicated by Gregory IX, went to Palestine to negotiate between them (Frederic had crowned himself King of Jerusalem).

I believe Pedro Guerin de "Montaigu", Master of the Hospital, and Pedro de "Montaigu", Master of the Knights Templar, knew each other and perhaps even went to pains to avoid each other. When they both were invited to the wedding of Frederick II (to Isabella?), they carefully arranged it so that they would not cross paths...

Can someone help me out here, please? Does anyone know the Estore d'Eracles? Who was John of Brienne?
